INTRODUCTION TO ASSERTIVENESS SKILLS
Assertiveness is an ideal state of being, regardless of any situation. Your balanced actions leave others free to be themselves, without prejudicing others. However, it is a journey and not a destination.
The key skills are; being honest without being personal, being non-negotiable, being proactive, setting boundaries, balancing your body language, calmly repeating your point of view, diffusing personal attack, acknowledging mistakes, asking questions for more information, and identifying with others.
As with any skill, practice is the key.
What is Assertiveness?
Assertiveness is a journey towards being a balanced person, in harmony with yourself and others. You surely will improve as you go, but should not expect to be perfect at it. Assertiveness is the ability to comfortably be yourself in interpersonal contact, leaving others free to be themselves. It encourages mutual respect, and gets the attention you deserve. Situations are pre-empted which could otherwise end in strife, anxiety, and trauma. The result is a feeling of well-being, confidence, and adequacy all round.
